Q & A about Pergo Original Laminate Flooring

1. How is a Pergo plank constructed?
It has a wear-resistant surface of melamine laminate over a decorative layer that is then bonded to a moisture-resistant, wood-based core.
2. How does the Pergo laminate function?
The surface layer provides durability, the decorative layer the design, the wood-based core the strength, and the backing adds stability and balance. In addition to its beauty and durability, Pergo provides exceptional walking comfort when installed over our Whisperwalk underlayment.
3.What makes a Pergo laminate floor so durable?
The surface is strengthened by hard particles, making it about 25 times stronger than the laminate of a kitchen countertop. It is virtually impervious to stains and is highly resistant to denting.
4. Where can I use a Pergo laminate floor?
Just about anywhere in your house - kitchen, living room, dining room, hallway, bedroom, children's room, even in bathrooms! It's especially good in high-traffic areas.
5. On what surfaces can a Pergo floor be installed?
Because the planks are only 1/3 inch thick, in most cases a Pergo floor can be installed over vinyl, linoleum, ceramic tiles, wood floors, particleboard, concrete or any other level, smooth floor. Wall-to-wall carpeting, however, must be removed. Note: 6-mill (0.15mm) polyethylene film must be used when installing over any concrete subfloor. Never install Pergo over a subfloor with a drain.
6. How do I install a Pergo floor?
You can easily install ergo yourself. See our Pergo installation guide at the in-store display.
7. How do moisture and humidity affect a Pergo floor?
When properly glued, it will resist moisture. A small expansion space (1/4 inch) is required around the entire perimeter of the floor to allow it to expand with changes in humidity. Use Pergo Sealant in the expansion space and around the toilet drain collar when installing Pergo in bathrooms and also in wet areas in kitchens.
8. How do I maintain my Pergo floor?
The floor never needs waxing or refinishing. A simple vacuuming will take care of most dirt and dust. (Do not use beater-bar vacuums.) Difficult stains, such as markers, require only a rag and some acetone (nail polish remover).
9. Who is Perstorp Flooring?
Based in Sweden, Perstorp Flooring, Inc., is the inventor and world's leading producer of laminate flooring. Perstorp's North American headquarters is located in Raleigh, North Carolina.

How to care for your new Pergo Original floor.
There's never been a floor so beautiful and yet so functional!
Pergo Original enhances your spaces with wood-like beauty, without the problems of wood or wood veneer. Your Pergo floor will keep its beauty year after year, with a minimum of effort. Caring for your floor is easy because Pergo is one of the most durable floors you can buy for your home.
Unlike a wood floor, Pergo's unique high-pressure melamine laminate surface is extremely wear-resistant. It stands up to high heels and heavy furniture, grease and red wine spots, strong sunlight and even a dropped cigarette! And with no harmful chemical emissions or allergens, Pergo will keep health-conscious families breathing easy.

Protect the floor
Pergo may scratch if not cared for properly. Therefore, a few simple protective measures are very important to keep your floor looking now. Place a doormat inside the front door to collect dirt particles which may scratch the floor. Place floor protectors under furniture legs and use only clean, seamless plastic caster wheels to prevent scratches and help maintain the beauty of your Pergo floor.

Regular maintenance:
The surface layer of a Pergo floor is hard and compact, so dirt and dust do not adhere to it easily. Therefore, vacuuming (use a hard-floor attachment, not a beater-bar) and mopping are usually all it takes to keep your floor clean. Do not wax or polish your Pergo floor.
The following steps are recommended for cleaning and maintenance:

Vacuum as needed or dust mop.
Wipe soiled areas with a clean, clamp mop.
For difficult spots like shoe polish, nail polish or tar (see spot guide).
Recommended cleaners for best results: Pergo Cleaner, vinegar and water or ammonia and water solution. Other cleaners may leave a dull film.

CAUTION: To avoid scratches, never clean floor with beater-bar vacuums, electric brooms, steel wool, scouring powder, or abrasive cleaners such as Comet or Ajax.

What if a plank gets damaged?
Minor damage can easily be repaired with Pergo Finishing Putty. The repair is almost invisible and will have the same wear resistance as the rest of the floor. (If the damage cannot be repaired with laminate finishing putty, your authorized Pergo retailer can recommend a professional to replace the entire plank.)
